Accessibility commitment

Halal Gourmet is committed to making its digital platform accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of ability, technology, or physical limitations.

We aim to adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA technical standard across our web application and mobile experiences.

Core accessibility features

We have engineered our user interface and design system with accessibility embedded from the ground up:

1. Keyboard navigation

  • Skip link: A skip to content link is the first focusable element on every page, allowing keyboard users to bypass global navigation directly to primary content.
  • Visible focus rings: Interactive controls display a distinct, high-contrast focus outline with a two-pixel offset whenever focused via keyboard. Focus styles are never suppressed without replacement.
  • Logical tab order: Focus sequence follows the natural reading and DOM order across all templates.
  • Overlay management: Modal dialogs, filter sheets, and menus trap focus appropriately while open, restore focus upon dismissal, and close predictably when pressing the Escape key.

2. Semantic structure and screen readers

  • Document landmarks: Pages use standard HTML5 landmarks, including header, navigation, main content, and footer regions.
  • Heading hierarchy: Each page contains exactly one primary heading (level one) followed by orderly heading levels without skipped ranks.
  • Informative labels: Interactive buttons and links carry descriptive accessible names. Decorative images use empty alternative text, while editorial photographs include descriptive captions.
  • Screen reader announcements: Form error notifications and status messages use polite live regions to announce updates clearly to assistive software.

3. Colour and contrast

  • Verified contrast ratios: All text and essential graphical controls meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 AA contrast thresholds across both light and dark visual themes.
  • Colour independence: Information is never conveyed through colour alone. Trust badges, active filters, review ratings, and system error states pair colour with distinct icons, shapes, and visible text labels.

4. Touch targets and motion

  • Generous touch targets: Interactive elements on touchscreens and mobile devices provide target areas of at least 44 by 44 pixels with ample spacing between adjacent controls.
  • Reduced motion: Our interface respects the prefers-reduced-motion operating system preference, disabling decorative transitions for users sensitive to motion. No element flashes more than three times per second.

Known limitations during preview

We actively review our interfaces to identify and resolve accessibility barriers. During our public preview:

  • Interactive map canvasses: Operating map exploration using only keyboard controls or screen reader software can be challenging. To ensure complete access, all directory pages provide an equivalent, fully accessible list view of restaurants and prayer spaces alongside map views.
