The method

Methodology: Halal London: where we'd send you

Editors' picks, not a league table. Every venue is on our London directory with its halal status sourced, and was chosen by our editors for what it cooks and how it presents itself. No venue paid to be here. The list is grouped by occasion, not scored.

How it was chosen

What we looked for

Cooking

What the venue's own menu shows it cooks: a point of view, a specialty it does properly, dishes you would travel for.

Setting

The kind of occasion the venue is for, as it presents itself: a celebration, a late grill, a weekend breakfast, a quick lunch.

Service as the venue presents it

What the venue says about how it works: booking, group and private dining, opening hours, how late it serves. We have not judged service in person.

Range

A spread of cuisines and kitchens across London, so the list is not twenty versions of one meal.

Value

Prices printed on the venue's own menu set against what the plate offers. A modest bill can earn a place as readily as a lavish one.

How the list was made

What qualifies. A venue must be in the Halal Gourmet London restaurant directory, where its halal status is sourced: either listed on a certifier's own register (the Halal Monitoring Committee), or stated by the venue on its own website, quoted. Aggregators and review sites are never used as evidence. The directory covers 106 London venues; this edition lists twenty of them. Halal status in the directory is about the meat. Where a venue's own menus include a wine list, bar or cocktails, we say so in its note, so you can decide.

How editors chose. Editors went through the directory, read each venue's published menu, prices, hours and description, and picked the places they would send a friend to, across fine dining, desserts, grills, steakhouses, breakfast and everyday value, and across London's neighbourhoods and budgets. This is a desk selection: it rests on what venues publish, not on a meal we are claiming to have eaten. Notes name only dishes, prices and facts that appear on the venue's own pages when we checked them, and where a note is opinion it says so in plain words.

No scores, no order of merit. Every venue is listed, none is ranked above another, and no numeric ratings are used. The numbers shown on each entry only keep the list in order by category. Venues within a category are not in order of preference.

Independence. No venue paid to be listed, paid for a better description, or was asked to. Nothing in this guide is advertising. Any commercial relationship with a venue would be disclosed on the entry and would never affect whether it is listed.

When it is revised. We review the guide every year and publish a new edition. Between editions we remove a venue that closes or stops saying it is halal, and we correct anything a venue tells us we have wrong. Prices and hours change often: check with the venue before you go.
