Navy Bean Pie
A silky, warm-spiced custard pie built on puréed navy beans in a whole-wheat crust. Created under a dietary code that no longer governs the community that made it, and kept anyway — the most recognizable dish in Black American Muslim culture.

Purée the cooked navy beans completely smooth — this is the whole technique. Sieve if any grain remains.

Blend with evaporated milk, sugar, eggs, melted butter, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla into a smooth custard.

Pour into the whole-wheat crust; bake at about 175°C until the edges set and the center still has a faint wobble.
