Editorial independence

Our standards for editorial separation from commercial partnerships, transparent labelling, and responsible AI drafting.

Separation of editorial and commercial decisions

Halal Gourmet was created to provide reliable, verifiable guidance for the global Muslim community. Our readers depend on our platform when choosing where to eat, how to travel, and where to pray. That trust depends upon complete separation between our editorial decisions and commercial interests.

Commercial considerations never dictate editorial coverage. Our editors, researchers, and contributors decide what subjects to investigate, which establishments to review, and how guides are structured based solely on relevance, factual merit, and community interest. Commercial partners and sponsors have no voice in editorial meetings and no authority to preview, edit, or veto editorial content.

What sponsors cannot buy

Our integrity rules ensure that commercial payment cannot influence our catalog or ratings:

  • Directory inclusion: Businesses cannot pay for inclusion in our directories. Listings are included because they meet our geographic and culinary scope, not because of a commercial fee.
  • Ranking positions: Sponsors cannot buy placement in organic search results or ranked lists. Promoted directory listings appear in designated blocks outside the organic sequence and never displace organic rankings.
  • Ratings and scores: Numerical star ratings reflect authentic member feedback and verified criteria. We never inflate, adjust, or manufacture ratings for advertisers.
  • Awards and endorsements: We do not sell awards, quality seals, or editorial endorsements.
  • Halal status and trust levels: A venue's halal trust level is determined exclusively by official certifier registers, primary documents, or explicit management declarations. Payment can never establish, elevate, or preserve a halal trust level.
  • Evidence and check dates: Commercial arrangements never alter the evidentiary basis of a listing or the recorded verification date.
  • Member critiques: Business owners may publish formal replies, but they cannot buy the removal, editing, or suppression of authentic member reviews.

Transparent labelling of commercial content

When commercial collaborations occur, they are disclosed with clear, unmistakable labelling:

  • Sponsorship: Editorial guides, sections, recipe collections, or newsletter editions supported by a commercial partner carry the label "Sponsored by …" accompanied by an explicit editorial independence statement.
  • Promoted listings: Businesses paying for extra directory exposure are labelled "Promoted". They are never described as "Recommended" or "Featured by Halal Gourmet", and their map pins use standard styling.
  • Sponsored content: Commercial articles or guides funded by an identified partner carry the label "Sponsored", clearly identifying the funder, author, approval date, and commercial purpose. They are visually distinguished from independent editorial articles.
  • Affiliate links: Commercial links that may yield a commission upon purchase are disclosed with the label "Affiliate link — we may earn a commission".
  • Shared visual boundaries: Paid placements never borrow the colour, shield iconography, or wording of certification badges and trust badges. Commercial modules never appear inside halal status panels, evidence boxes, source lists, prayer tools, or moderation screens.

Authorship and AI drafting disclosure

Our publishing standards require transparency in research and writing:

  • Named human authors: Long-form essays, destination guides, and cultural features carry the byline of the human writer who researched and wrote the piece. Third-party work is never attributed to internal staff.
  • AI research and drafting: We use AI models to research and draft content. Every factual claim must cite a source and is checked against that source before it is published. AI-drafted text is never published under a person's name.
  • No synthetic engagement: We never generate reviews, ratings, or community posts with automated tools.
  • Independent verification: Catalog content undergoes independent verification against cited sources before publication, ensuring every claim is substantiated.

Corrections and accountability

Editorial independence requires ongoing accountability to our readers:

  • Suggesting a correction: If you believe an editorial article has been compromised by commercial influence, or if you identify a factual inaccuracy in our catalog, please submit an update through our corrections page or email corrections@halalgourmet.com directly.
  • Editorial enquiries: For questions regarding our editorial standards and policies, contact editors@halalgourmet.com.
