London

A city where halal dining runs from £8 rice bowls to Knightsbridge dining rooms, the London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel houses its own restaurant, and the Mayor's Eid festival fills Trafalgar Square.

Muslim Friendliness

Evidence-backed factors verified on the ground. Checked on 2026-10-03.

Halal Food

Halal food is widely available and easy to find across the city.

Visit London's own iftar guide lists halal restaurants across Middle Eastern and Asian kitchens, and venues from Fitzrovia to Forest Gate appear on the Halal Monitoring Committee's register or state their halal status themselves.

  • Visit London's iftar guide rounds up ten halal and vegan restaurants, from Middle Eastern and Asian dishes to sweet treats, and says there are hundreds of places to break fast in London.

  • The Halal Monitoring Committee's outlet register lists Tikkas in Fitzrovia and Penang City in Forest Gate as HMC certified, and Souk near Covent Garden says its food is 100% halal and HMC certified.

Prayer Spaces

Mosques and prayer spaces are widespread and accessible throughout the area.

Heathrow keeps a multi-faith prayer room in every terminal, and the two best-known mosques publish daily prayer timetables, with a restaurant and café at the Islamic Cultural Centre.

Muslim Community

A vibrant and visible Muslim community is established here.

The 2021 census counted 15.0% of Londoners as Muslim, rising to 39.9% in Tower Hamlets, and the Mayor's Eid festival has run for 19 years.

  • In the 2021 census 15.0% of people in London described themselves as Muslim, up from 12.6% in 2011, and Tower Hamlets had the highest share in England and Wales at 39.9%.

Treatment & Hospitality

Experiences are generally polite, though awareness of Muslim customs varies.

The Home Office recorded a 19% rise in religious hate crime against Muslims nationally in the year to March 2025, while the Mayor's office hosts Muslim festivals openly. The national figures exclude the Metropolitan Police, so they say little about London alone.

  • The Home Office recorded a 19% rise in religious hate crimes targeted at Muslims in England and Wales, from 2,690 to 3,199 offences, in the year ending March 2025; the figure excludes the Metropolitan Police.

  • The Mayor of London's free, annual Eid in the Square festival reached its 19th year in Trafalgar Square in 2024.

Modest Dress & Hijab

Modest dress is respected and comfortable in everyday public spaces.

The Equality Act protects religion or belief, and the equality regulator says an employee can object to a dress code that conflicts with their faith. Rules still vary by employer and venue.

  • The Equality and Human Rights Commission says an employee can object to a workplace dress code or uniform policy that conflicts with their religion or belief, and employers must not discriminate directly or indirectly.

Ramadan Observance

Ramadan is celebrated openly with late-night bazaars, communal iftars, and adjusted schedules.

The Mayor of London partners on a free Open Iftar in Trafalgar Square, and Visit London says there are hundreds of places to break fast across the city.

Where to Eat

Halal London is a map of whole cuisines rather than a single high street. Visit London's own guide to iftar rounds up halal spots from Soho to Earls Court, from Levantine and Malaysian kitchens to a famous halal cart, and notes that there are hundreds of places to break the fast across the city.

At the quick end, Tikkas in Fitzrovia lists tikka bowls and wraps for under £10 and says it is fully halal and alcohol-free, and GUGSU on Whitechapel High Street lists rice boxes at around £8 and says all its food is halal. For an evening out, Penang City in Forest Gate and Samarkand in Stoke Newington both list mains in the £10 to £19 band on their own menus and are on the Halal Monitoring Committee's register. For a celebration, Mahdi in Hammersmith and Salloos in Knightsbridge list mains in the £20 to £34 band.

Persian cooking is a London strength too. Berenjak in Soho states on its own website that it serves halal meat at all its London restaurants, and Souk near Covent Garden says its food is 100% halal and HMC certified.

Where to Pray

The London Central Mosque Trust and Islamic Cultural Centre publishes a prayer timetable and lists a restaurant and café and visits on its website. East London Mosque, in the London Muslim Centre on Whitechapel Road, posts the daily start and congregation times for each prayer.

Heathrow keeps a multi-faith prayer room in every terminal, open to everyone and listed with wudu facilities, so a long layover does not need planning around a prayer time.

Neighbourhoods & Areas

Start in Whitechapel. Tower Hamlets has the highest share of Muslim residents of any local authority in England and Wales in the 2021 census, the London Muslim Centre houses Baraka Eatery, and Original Haji Nanna's Biryani on Whitechapel Road is on the Halal Monitoring Committee's register.

Edgware Road is the Levantine address, home to the first Al Arez, a Lebanese restaurant and café whose website carries a halal label in its main navigation. Brick Lane adds Babel Grill House, which describes itself as a Lebanese halal restaurant and lists charcoal-grilled mains between £18.95 and £29.95.

Practical Tips

Before you book, read the venue's own halal statement or look it up on the certifier's register, and check the opening hours that the restaurant publishes, as they differ from branch to branch. Under the Equality Act an employee can object to a workplace dress code that conflicts with their religion, which is why hijab and modest dress are common across London workplaces and venues.

Ramadan in the City

The Mayor of London partners with the Ramadan Tent Project on Open Iftar in Trafalgar Square, free with a ticket, and the Mayor's Eid in the Square closes the month. Visit London's iftar guide says there are hundreds of places to break fast across the city.
